Building the Body - John Chapter 6
If you're old enough, you've heard the advertisements for Wonder Bread:
"Wonder - It Builds The Body Twelve Ways"
With an ad like that, you might think that after you ate it, you turned into Superman or somehting. The problem with white bread is that it is full of carbs that rev you up then leave you needing more right away. There are other kinds of breads that last longer in your stomach.
In John Chapter 6 we see a group of people who thought that getting a quick fix to their immediate problem, just like the Wonder Bread claim, was the only thing they needed.
Jesus, though, has much better bread for them......and for us!
Jesus points out a problem to the disciples and to us: Our first tendency is to scan our environment and make a judgment. Jesus wants us to broaden our perspectives, becasue when you are with Him, there is nothing that is impossible.
But, be careful what you expect Jesus to do for you. A true understanding of Jesus' mission in your life might not be to your liking, but it will be to your benefit. Let Jesus do the more important work in you life of cleansing and transforming you, and don't worry so much about the obvious or physical things. He promises to take care of those things, but we should seek His kingdom and His righteousness first.
The people in John Chapter 6 focused on "work" - the work for food that perishes - while Jesus focused on the fact that He was going to "give" the bread that provided eternal sustenance. In our natural state, we seem to focus on what we can do to earn something, but Jesus clearly tells us that we simply could never do enough to earn God's favor, or even to His works, on our own.
A superficial relationship isn't enough. You can't just call our for "Manna" and expect to get eternal life. Jesus is looking for belief in faithj, which means a commitment to Him as a person. You must have a personal relationship with Jesus. You can't rely on physical life to get you by forever. You eat, you live, you get sick, you die. We've got to set our sights higher than that. There really is something beyond just physical earthly life, and Jesus has it.
For those of us who can call Jesus our Savior and our LORD, we realize ther is no other place to go. You can tempt us with physical things, or with other philosophies or other religious ideas, but Jesus has the words of eternal life.....that is all that really matters.
